ROBERT STEWART

A native of Collingwood, Robert had a lifelong involvement in all facets of harness racing and served as the society's chief executive officer for almost 16 years. In his early teens, he trained horses owned by his parents, Ray and Edna Steward. During the summer he worked as a groom at the raceways for another Collingwood Sports Hall of Famer, Clarence Lockhart, and also for Pat Crowe. He trained horses for Jack Smith and Russ Irwin.

After receiving his early education in Collingwood, Robert graduated in Business Administration from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, and then from Akron School of Business Administration where he made the dean's list both years. He was licensed as a driver in 1969 and drove primarily a "B" tracks, such as Owen Sound, and Fall Fairs in Collingwood and Barrie. Robert was also licensed as a starter and associate judge form 1970 until 1978. His Adanac Farms co-owned many outstanding racehorses, such as Happy Little, Mon Vieux, Saunders Alpine Lobel and Trojan Leroy. These horses were all winners of more than $165,000.00.

The Collingwood native was widely known and well respected throughout the Standardbred Industry in both Canada and the United States.

Robert Stewart, secretary-manager of the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society, died suddenly on March 25, 1987. He collapsed while playing in an old-timer's hockey game. He was 38 years old.

Robert Stewart was inducted into the Collingwood Sports Hall of Fame in June, 1990.
